Elon Musk and his xAI startup released Grok. An AI chatbot that can apparently outperform the first iteration of OpenAI ChatGPT in several academic tests.
Musk and xAI explained in a Nov. 5 X (ex-Twitter) post that Grok’s motivation is to create AI-powered tools to help humanity by empowering research and innovation.
Elon Musk and the xAI team said that a unique and fundamental advantage that Grok has is that it has real-time information from the world through the X (formerly Twitter) platform.
Elon Musk and xAI say it also answers tough questions that most AI systems ignore. Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of humor and has a rebellious streak, so if you hate humor, please don’t use it!
Based on data and information shared by xAI, Grok’s powered engine – Grok-1 – was evaluated in several academic tests in mathematics and coding and outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 in all tests. However, it did not outperform OpenAI’s most advanced version, GPT-4, in any of the tests.

This is only surpassed by models trained with significant amounts of training data and computational resources such as GPT-4, Musk and xAI say. This demonstrates our rapid development of xAI in LLM education with exceptional performance.
The artificial intelligence startup noted that Grok will be available on X Premium Plus for $16 per month. But it is currently only available to a limited number of users in the United States.
xAI noted that Grok is still a very early beta product that should improve quickly by the week. The xAI team stated that they will also implement additional security measures over time to ensure that Grok is not used maliciously.
