The statement explained: “A small portion of our customer support boards that contain partial, incomplete and out-of-date information. It was accessed by an individual or group through phishing of a customer support representative.”
Fortunately, the customer support agent at risk did not have “super permissions” that limited their access to support tools and help desk tickets.
Bitfinex was keen to emphasize that its core systems remain unharmed. And no client funds were at risk during this incident. The statement stated: “No server, wallet or database infrastructure was accessed. At no point were the client’s assets on the platform at risk. And the password information remained inaccessible. Most of the affected customers’ accounts were empty or inactive.”
Although Bitfinex announced that the issue was “resolved. But they continue to evaluate the incident and the information at risk. And at the same time they call the customers.
In response to the security breach, Bitfinex quickly alerted law enforcement and is cooperating with investigative authorities to track down the person responsible for the phishing attack.
